Our iPhone Wish List: the iPod

2007-08-03 04:13:00    view : 243

Continuing the Wish List series, here's our list of features we'd like to see in the iPhone's iPod section; the number after each item represents how many editors, out of seven, requested that feature in our informal survey. Already covered: iPod Disk Mode (6). Bluetooth A2DP (4): As I explained back in June, A2DP stands for Advanced Audio Distribution Profile, a Bluetooth profile that supports stereo audio transmission; newer mobile phones use A2DP to send stereo audio wirelessly to compatible speaker systems and to stereo Bluetooth headsets. As I noted back then, I find the iPhone's lack of A2DP support especially odd given that the iPhone includes the best music player of any phone on the market. But I suspect--and comments from a couple sources support my suspicion--that A2DP support will be added by a future software update. Lyrics display (4): Even though Steve Jobs called the iPhone the "best iPod ever," it's missing a few features other iPods have had for quite a while. One of these is the capability to display each track's lyrics (assuming you've got the lyrics in iTunes, of course). Given that the iPhone’s screen is much more suited to reading text than the screens of exiting iPods, this omission is disappointing. iPod games support (4): As with lyrics, the iPhone's gorgeous display seems well-suited for games; and lets not forget that the iPhone runs a version of OS X and, presumably, includes more powerful hardware than the 5G iPod. On the other hand, existing iPod games would have to be updated substantially to work with the iPhone's touchscreen interface and lack of a Click Wheel. Physical buttons for basic playback control (3): The iPhone's touchscreen interface is stunning, but it's useless when the phone is in your pocket or a bag. As I wrote recently, a good music player needs physical buttons for at least basic playback controls: play/pause, forward, back, volume. (The button built into the iPhone's earbuds doesn't count; it's a clever design, but it can only toggle playback and skip forward. Not to mention that many people prefer to use better headphones.) Even a simple wired remote, a la Apple's iPod Radio Remote without the radio, would do. See the full list of iPod feature requests after the jump.
